Spyware Update

7 01 2005

The spyware battle has gotten uglier since my last post on the subject. As recently as last Summer, folks like Walt Mossberger the head tech honco at the Wall Street Journal and USA Today were reccomending Ad-Aware and Spybot and little else to take care of the problem. My view now, is that those two alone only scratch the surface, now. In fact, spyware is more like spam now, something that can be controlled or lessened but not stopped completely in many cases.

A couple of new free tools are helping. A Squared and X-Ray PC make it easier for the inexperienced spyware fighter to effect some serious changes. As the tools get stronger, though, it becomes easier to make big mistakes when deleting files from a computer. Use caution.

I’d reccomend switching browsers Internet Explorer to Mozilla’s Firefox for additional help at no charge. Besides, it has tabbed browsing and is generally more fun.

The most widely reccomended tool that costs money is Webroot’s Spy Sweeper. It costs around $30.00. There is an online version that you can try for no charge, here.

Good luck fighting the bad guys and, as always, let me know if there is anything I can to to help.
